Summer Classes Wloo Ctr for the Arts PDF Print E-mail

New summer classes, workshops and day camps are starting in July at the Waterloo Center for the Arts, and you’re invited!   There’s pottery, puppetry, toy making, time-travel, international adventures, and more for youth, adults and families to explore. 

Pre-registration is required for all classes; call the Waterloo Center for the Arts at (319) 291-4490 to sign up.  Below are the classes that begin in July; visit "http://www.waterloocenterforthearts.org" www.waterloocenterforthearts.org for a complete summer class schedule, including those that begin in August.

Youth Classes
Destination: India (Ages 7-10)
Friday, July 18, 1:00-3:00pm. Fee: $10
No need to hop an airplane, come to the WCA and explore the rich and colorful culture of India. Tie-dye a sari and sip on chai as you learn about gods, goddesses and yearly festivals.
Registration Deadline: July 11
 
Toys & Games Around the World (Ages 9-12)
Saturday, July 19, 1:00-4:00pm. Fee: $15
See and make some of the folk toys that children play with around the world and enjoy trying their board and outside games as well! You will also get time to explore the Phelps Youth Pavilion.

TAG Clay Camp (Ages 13-16)
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday July 22-24, 11:00am-4:00pm. Fee: $70
3 days of pure muddy mayhem! Work with an experienced ceramicist and develop skills in wheel, coil and slab building. Learn about the stages in the firing process and experiment with a variety of glazes. Please bring a sack lunch.

Adventures in Ghana (Ages 7-10)
Friday, July 25, 1:00-3:00pm. Fee: $10
Travel to Ghana, West Africa and explore the culture, food and language of its people! Create a drum and dance to the beat of traditional African music.
Registration Deadline: July 18

If You Lived Long Ago…Fun in Iowa of Old (Ages 5-8)
Saturday, July 26, 1:00-3:00pm. Fee: $15
Go back to the time of 1895 before TV, video games and iPods and see what life was like to live on a farm in Iowa. Milk a pretend cow, lift bales of hay, go to a one-room schoolhouse and try some things, both work and play, that children might have done in the 1800s.

Adult classes (ages 16 and up)
Green Art Series: Felted Handbags (Ages 16 & up)
Saturday, July 12, 2:00-4:00pm Fee: $25 (includes supplies)
Finally! A new and creative use for those old, worn wool sweaters. Bring a favorite old sweater of your own if you like.
 

Family Fun
Playdate with Art (Ages 3-5 with an adult)
Fridays, 10:00-11:30am, 3-week session starting July 11. Fee: $30 (includes child and adult)
Create with pencils, crayons, markers, paint and clay in new ways…a great way to meet and make new friends!

Muddy Madness (Ages 8 and up with an adult)
Saturdays, 2:00-5:00pm, 4-week session starting July 19. Fee: $65 (includes child and adult)
Work together as a family and discover the wonders of clay by shaping it into fantastic creations.
