The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art will present the musical ensemble "New Prairie Camerata" on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Gallery proper. The concert is presented in association with the exhibition "New Polyphonies: Contemporary Art from Portugal," which runs from Wednesday, Feb. 13 through Thursday, Mar. 6. The Grinnell-based ensemble New Prairie Camerata was begun in 2006 by flutist Claudia Anderson - Principal Flute since 2005 with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony - along with harpist Jeanmarie Kern Chenette and violinist Nancy McFarland Gaub. All three artists have national and international reputations and extensive experience as soloists and ensemble performers. New Prairie Camerata is dedicated to performing in non-traditional spaces such as Grinnell's so-called "Jewel Box" Bank and the Faulconer Gallery at Grinnell College, a concept that seeks to link performance with community and architecture. The ensemble will present a concert of chamber music from the Iberian Peninsula and former Portuguese colonies titled "Espírito Português" that features works by a wide variety of composers including Carlos Seixas, Pedro Escobar, Georges Bizet, Maurice Ravel, Manuel de Falla, Astor Piazzolla, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. The musical periods represented in this program include Portuguese compositions from the European Renaissance, Baroque, and early 20th century as well as Brazilian bossa nova classics by Jobim and Argentine tangos by Piazzolla. All events at the UNI Gallery of Art are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday; and noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The gallery is located at the northeast corner of Hudson Road and West 27th Street, Cedar Falls, on the main floor of the Kamerick Art Building.
