This exhibition represents a major collaboration between the UNI Gallery of Art, Faulconer Gallery at Grinnell College, and Janalyn Hanson White Gallery at Mt. Mercy College. All three institutions will present exhibitions drawn from 21 different artists originally chosen by curator Lesley Wright, director of Faulconer Gallery, and professor Jane Gilmor of Mt. Mercy College after an excursion to Portugal in 2006 and 2007.

According to Gallery director Darrell Taylor, "the word polyphonies is a term in music where two or more independent melodies are played at once. The artists selected for this exhibition have created artworks that utilize a wide range of media and expressive subject matter presented in unison and in harmony." Six artists were selected by Taylor for inclusion at the UNI Gallery of Art: Pedro Valdez Cardoso, Marta de Menezes, Miguel Palma, Nuno Pedrosa, José Carlos Teixeira, and Rui Toscano.
