The Loras Players will combine with Fly-By-Night Productions to stage, in repertory, two of the most highly respected plays in western theatre. HAMLET is William Shakespeare’s 16th century masterpiece, while ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD is Tom Stoppard’s modern, comedic masterpiece re-envisioning the story of Hamlet from a different perspective; that of two minor characters, college chums of Hamlet, and how they are affected by larger events outside of their control. A unique, once in a lifetime theatre experience!

University of Iowa Writers' Workshop alumna Frances de Pontes Peebles, winner of Brazil's Sacatar Artist's Fellowship, will read from her debut novel, "The Seamstress," in a free "Live from Prairie Lights" event hosted by WSUI's Julie Englander at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City.

In observance of Banned Books Week, multiple copies of Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 classic novel Lolita, as well as Azar Nafisi's 2003 memoir Reading Lolita in Tehran, are now on display and available for check out at Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque.

GRINNELL, IA—Central Iowa’s delicate ecosystem is the focus of an upcoming photo exhibit at Grinnell College’s Burling Gallery, Aug. 22-Nov. 1. “A Constructed Balance” by photographer Emily Grimes features landscape images of her family’s Marshalltown area farm and nature preserve, through planting, growing, and harvest cycles.

Meet Thurston Wheelis and Arlis Struvie who run the local radio station OKKK, and Bertha Bumiller and her three no-neck children, as well as Petey Fisk who runs the Tuna Humane Society and Aunt Pearl, who has her own solution to Tuna's pet problem. You'll laugh yourself silly as the two DJ's portray ALL the wacky, off-center, politically incorrect citizens of Tuna, Texas - even the dogs!

AUDITIONS SET FOR WATERLOO-CEDAR FALLS SYMPHONY PDF Print E-mail

Auditions are now being scheduled for player vacancies in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony for their 2008-09 season.  Positions to be filled include section strings, oboe 3/auxiliary English horn, bassoon 2 and bassoon 3/contrabassoon.  All winds and brass are encouraged to audition for the sub list.

The new amuse bouche exhibition at the Dubuque Museum of Art features prints from Louise Kames’ series about a Medieval, spiritual group of women.  In the latter part of the twelfth century the women who became known as “Beguines” began a creative experiment in a new style of living. It was a life shaped by the Gospel of Jesus.

Cedar Rapids artist, Thomas C. Jackson presents his most recent examinations of American pastimes and politics in this exhibition of oil paintings.  Jackson photographs scenes that inspire him and then uses the photos to create his own interpretation of the significance or uniqueness of the scene.  Using brushstrokes and varying levels of detail, Jackson guides the viewer to the important focal points of these energetic paintings.
